The largest and most developed Balearic Island, Mallorca is one of Spain’s most popular destinations. This year, it has recorded the greatest increase in tourists of all Spanish regions, enticing low-cost airline easyJet to open a base there.
In March alone, the Balearic Islands welcomed 678,000 international holidaymakers, a rise of 39.3% on 2015’s figure, with Mallorca accounting for a large share.
According to the most recent data from Spain’s national statistics institute (INE), 4.82m tourists visited the country in March, with UK visitor numbers rising by 25% on the same month last year. The UK remains the single largest market for international tourism in Spain, accounting for 23.1% of all visitors in March this year.
Meanwhile, as a sign of confidence in Mallorca’s importance as a tourist and second home destination, airline easyJet has announced that Palma de Mallorca will be their first ever seasonal base. From March to October 2017, three aircraft will be based at the Spanish airport.
Recent figures from Aena show that easyJet carried double the number of passengers through Palma airport in 2015 compared with 11 years ago. The latest investment in the island’s airport only highlights the positive expectations for its future.
Laura Richards, of PropertyGuides.com, says: “For homeowners in Mallorca, the prospect of more flights to the island will be hugely welcome. Improved access will just add to the appeal of the island, which really caters for everyone, from the international jet set, boat lovers and the Spanish royal family, to typical British families looking for a friendly beach destination.”
Meanwhile, Marc Pritchard, the Sales and Marketing Director at Taylor Wimpey España, comments: “easyJet’s decision emphasises Mallorca’s presence as a primary destination of choice for international tourists. As demand continues to grow, we are determined to provide an array of high quality properties in locations that reflect the best of Mallorca’s culture, culinary creations and coastline.”
A great example of what’s available to buy on the island today is the Bahia Sant Pere complex – less than an hour from Palma airport, and just a short distance from the local fishing port and Mallorca’s golden coastline. Each two and three-bedroom apartment, priced from €189,000, has two bathrooms, an open-plan kitchen with a breakfast bar and a private parking space. Each resident will also have access to the development’s two swimming pools and communal gardens.
Known for its stunning natural beauty, the village of Colonia de Sant Pere allows visitors to experience the more rustic side of Mallorca, with access to the mountainous landscape of the Peninsula de Llevant Natural Park and the white, sandy beach of Sa Canova.
If you are thinking of booking a holiday to Mallorca, you may just find the destination that you want to move to or buy a holiday home. With high tourist numbers guaranteed, you could even secure a lucrative rental property on the island.
